Munich! Here we go! – Student Retreat 2013

During a warm and nice weekend in mid of June 26 of us boarded the train to Munich. The direct connection brought us quickly to the main train station and from there it was another quick tram ride to the hostel.

Right after moving into the rooms, we started the scientific session with our keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Andreas Ladurner. He is a full professor the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. He talked about his scientific achievements and his most important results throughout his career. Interwoven within his scientific lecture he gave some personal remarks on his choices and decision. The talk ended on tips to become a successful scientist and make your career. Following a short round of questions, Prof. Ladurner joined us for dinner at the hostel. It was not the most exquisite cousin, but we enjoyed him sticking around.

We finished the scientific part with 8 excellent talks. Afterwards people grabbed a drink at the hostel’s own store, sat down to chat until the staff enforced the night curfew. Quite too early, if you ask us.

The next day we heard 18 more short talks with a lively discussion after each one.

In the afternoon, we had tour with the topic that first comes to mind, when thinking of Munich: beer. Our guide showed us a few of the favorite places and a quick tour through one of Munich’s breweries. The tour ended at Munich’s one most well-known places: the Hofbruhaus. We had some more beers and dinner accompanied by a live band with traditional music and dances.

From here on, we made way to Munich’s clubbing area. We were quite early and entered the club as one of the firsts. Lucky them! The party started! We had a great time, dancing, drinking, and chatting.

Sunday morning we left the hostel, headed for the main train station, and stuffed our luggage into lockers. Then we had a typical “Weiwurst” breakfast, directly at Marienplatz. Another city tour focused on the historic background of Munich gave us insight into a different aspect of Munich than the brewery tour.

Unfortunately the weekend ended at some point and we headed back to Heidelberg.

Ice Skating

We checked out the local ice skating ring in Eppelheim. Some, brave enough, tackled the skates for the first time. Their heroic act is documented below:

HBIGS X-Mas 2012

What would a December be without a Christmas party? Thou we are curios by nature, we would not dare to make that experiment. So we had a nice party at Chez Pierre with nice food and some really cool live band, playing Christmas songs and more. Even Santa stop by and handed out gifts. Here are some impressions of the evening:

HBIGS Student Retreat 2012

Hi there,

The 2012 HBIGS Student Retreat delivered the perfect balance of science and recreation and served as confirmation that this PhD program truly does attract students that are as intellectually engaging as they are fun and creative!
Famous for its world-class wine and ancient Roman ruins, Trier served as the host city and provided its welcome Mediterranean climate, allowing the group several excursions around the town throughout the weekend. The retreat venue was a cozy hotel along the quiet Mosel River, where the family owners catered delicious Hungarian cuisine and prepared the largest room for both meals and presentations, granting us a unique space just for the retreat program.
To kick-off the retreat with a new tradition, an exceptional keynote presentation was given by Prof. Dr. Andrea Mller, of the Faculty of Biology and Science Education of Trier University. She addressed the path of a scientific career choice, hinting on the essential intersection of both talent and motivation, and provided a fascinating look into research on how students conceptualize and embrace pivotal aspects of the scientific method throughout their academic career. Four absorbing HBIGS student talks followed, and afterward, discussions continued over beer and wine until the late hours of the evening.
The next day was welcomed with steaming coffee and the second session of student talks. Thesis topics ranged from protein kinetics and structure biology to genetics, drug delivery and biosensors, neurobiology, embryogenesis, cancer diagnostics, cell biology, and virology. Even with such a wide spread of expertise, targeted questions led to further discussions during the coffee breaks and fostered some potential collaborations. By the end of the third session in the afternoon, votes were collected and tallied to award the three best presenters of the weekend each with 25-euro cash prizes, also a new addition to the annual retreat program. Congratulations go to Sahil Sharma, Thekla Hemstedt, and Christian Harak!
The energy continued at a favorite local wine tasting room, "Das Weinhaus", where a wine connoisseur led the group in tasting five local Mosel wines, entertainingly explaining both subtle and dramatic characteristics of the range of choices. A hearty and, particularly after five glasses of wine, delicious meal completed the experience. For many of the group, the night was all about the Champions League Final football match, which, despite the unfortunate final result, provided the opportunity to find a great pub in the center of town where everyone could comfortably enjoy both the game and conversation, with some shisha on the side. The evening progressed with a lively party at a dance club located at the foot of Germany's oldest cathedral.
Ample sunshine made for an enjoyable city tour the next day, led by an enthusiastic guide around most of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites sprinkled around the historic capital of the Western Roman Empire. All in all, according to the rhapsodic feedback from the entire group, the 25 HBIGS student participants made this retreat a great success.

Adler Mannheim vs. Cologne Sharks

Hi there,

we saw an exciting match between the local icehockey team Adler Mannheim and the Cologne Sharks. Adler Mannheim scored the first goal and had watch the puck cross the lines of their own goal just about 30 seconds later. From there on the Sharks dominated the game and won the match.

2nd Photo Contest

Last year, the HBIGS Photo Contest was established to visually demonstrate some of the fascinating work being done within the Graduate School. Of all entries, 12 were selected to compose the first HBIGS calendar, provided to all students as a holiday gift from the program. Turning this great event into a tradition, we ask you again to send us your favorite photo or image. The only requirement is that the picture relates to lab life, your thesis project, or graduate education in the broadest sense (and keep it dignified- last night’s party will likely not be considered). Those whose pictures are selected will each receive a 50 Euro prize and be recognized in the 2012 calendar.

Please send your picture (one per participant) to pelzer@ana.uni-heidelberg.de by 30 Nov.
